How To Be Anti-Racist

“In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist.” - ANGELA Y. DAVIS

Systemic racism—bias within the very foundation of a nation’s political and economic institutions— oppresses and kills people of color. It happens every day…we watch it on the news and see it in our neighborhoods. It’s not enough to let other people fight this fight…this battle belongs to all of us. And being silent is not an option. Being anti-racist is about taking real action, making choices every day to educate yourself and others about racism, and working towards positive change. This is a commitment we need to make to ourselves for a better present and future.

So many people are asking, how do I help? What can I do? Here’s an easy place to start:

Speak up! Use your voice as often and as loud as you can. Talk to your family, friends, and colleagues about racism. Challenge each other’s opinions, challenge the system in which you live and work. Let yourself be heard!

Vote! The responsibility that comes with voting is powerful and impactful. Research candidates and do the work to make sure your vote is informed and the people you put into office reflect the America you want to see.

Know where your dollar is going! Use your money to support brands that promote positivity, change, and awareness.

Ask questions! Life is one big learning lesson. Constantly ask questions about the world around you…especially if you see something that needs to change.

Be honest with yourself! Racism is an institutional problem but one way to tackle it is by discovering your own biases and talking about them with the people you surround yourself with. And then never let those biases happen again!

Awareness of racism and the discussion of being anti-racist begins at home and filters out…into schools, work, and the government. Start educating yourself right now. Read this article from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and then share it.

As the article states, “small choices made daily can add up to big changes.” What small choices in standing up against racism will you make today?
