3 Things I Learned in My First Year As A Mom

On July 19th, we celebrated Santi's FIRST birthday! July 19th also marks my first year as a mother. I've been reflecting a lot and am so proud of what my body has accomplished in bringing him into the world, the gift and miracle that it gave me. Santi has become such an integral part of me and my heart is happier than I could've ever imagined. I'm so lucky to be his Mama. I learned a lot in this first year, and I’m sharing 3 of those things today.

1. I'm a better mom when I honor my needs. FIRST.

I take ‘Me Time’ seriously. When I make the effort to take care of myself, I can show up as a Mother in ways that make me proud. Honoring my needs will make me a more present mom, as well as act as an example to Santi for what it looks like to take good care of yourself. I want him to grow up honoring and respecting the person he is becoming, and the best way I can do that is to show him how it’s done.

2. Integrate the baby into my life, and not the other way around.

A friend shared this advice with me and it's made all the difference. One example of this is when ate at a NYC restaurant I didn’t want to miss. It’s not necessarily a kid-friendly place, but we went at a kid-friendly time. Eating between 5-6pm gave us the best of both worlds: we were able to eat where I wanted to go while also keeping Santi close to his routine. Dropping the things we love to do aren’t part of the deal, so we integrate them in Santi-friendly ways.

3. I have never loved so deeply and purely.

In the last year, my heart has burst open in ways I couldn't imagine. There truly are no words to describe the amount of love I feel towards this little person and I am amazed by him every single day.
